Like It's Yesterday

The song reflects on the lingering pain and heartache experienced after a significant loss. The lyrics convey a sense of time dragging on endlessly since the departure of a loved one, with restless and lonely nights filled with memories of both good and bad times. The narrator embarks on a solitary journey down a lonely road, haunted by the wish that the departed person could still be present, especially during simple moments like morning coffee. The emotional weight of the lyrics intensifies as the singer reminisces about the happy times shared with the person, describing the joy and completeness experienced in their presence. The recollection of those moments becomes a bittersweet refuge, with the singer finding solace in the vivid memories that play out like scenes from yesterday. The repetition of the phrase "All I got to do is close my eyes" emphasizes the ease with which these memories resurface, as if the past is vividly present when the eyes are shut. The lyrics evoke a longing for the past and a deep yearning for the lost connection, expressing the profound impact that the departed person had on the narrator's life. Despite the pain, the song captures the beauty and intensity of the memories that persist, keeping the essence of the relationship alive even though the person is no longer physically present.

song about drug addiction, depression, self doubt, feeling lost, and suicide

Hurt was covered by Johnny Cash during 2002; the video made for Cash’s version of the song is considered by many to be one of the best music videos of all time. Originally the song was written and performed by Trent Reznor and officially released 27 years ago on April 17, 1995; a year later after its release the song was nominated for a Grammy award for Best Rock Song. Rains was touched by the song because of its references by both Reznor and Cash; the song alludes to drug addiction, depression, self doubt, feeling lost, and suicide. Rains related to those feelings after losing his son after years of drug addiction. After the loss of his son, Rains spiraled down into a state of sadness and depression. Rains was inspired to make his own version of the song because he could relate to it thinking of his own self doubts. He reflected on his own past wondering if he could have done something different that would have changed the path his son took. Rains found arranging and recording his own version of the song Hurt to be cathartic. Rains’s music rendition of the song is a mixture of Reznor’s and Cash’s while doing his own version. It starts with a soft gentle mellow airy synthesizer with a piano playing hints of the song’s melody during an upward crescendo on the piano followed immediately by the well known cadence of the song done on the piano. About mid song the rhythm is done on an acoustic guitar playing that familiar sound of Cash. The song ends with “If I could start again…” done with repeating echos giving a feeling of hope and rebirth and a wanting for more. … Ultimately, there's a glimmer of hope in the desire to start anew, even if it means being miles away from the person they once were. "Hurt" is a poignant exploration of inner turmoil, regret, and the enduring struggle for redemption and self-forgiveness. “a million miles away”.
